About REAL LIFE:

REAL LIFE creates pathways to attain and sustain a thriving life for those who desire change.

Our REAL Houses offer a safe place that our Lifers can call home while they receive holistic programming services. REAL Houses are the only free structured environment houses in Richmond. Most prospective Lifers (clients) are exiting incarceration or experiencing homelessness - bouncing from couch to couch, living in an abandoned building, or simply sleeping on the street. Finding a job or achieving other milestones necessary for a Thriving Life is nearly impossible due to having no place to leave their personal belongings, shower, eat, sleep, or even to wash clothes. REAL Houses allow a new Lifer to move in, free of charge. Once they find work with the assistance of our Senior Employment Navigator, they begin paying a modest weekly programming fee.

To learn more about REAL LIFE, please visit our website at reallifeprogram.org.

The Project: When new clients first arrive at the REAL LIFE recovery houses, they often arrive with no money to purchase basic necessities, like food. You can help make their transition a bit easier by providing a REAL House with a box of non-perishable food items such as snack foods, meals, breakfast foods, canned goods, and coffee to share with the new Lifers. We also ask that you provide approximately enough food for dinners for the equivalent of two people for one month. You can also include a couple of your favorite go-to recipes for inspiration!

You can shop for items on your own using our list of suggested items, or you can order a ready-made box directly from The Market at 25th.

A few important notes:

  • Once you express interest, someone from the REAL LIFE team will contact you within two business days with a link to sign up for a specific house and month. Please do not complete the project until you have signed up for a specific house and month.
  • The address listed on this opportunity is our community center. Should you choose to shop on your own, you will make arrangements to drop at the center and we will distribute to our houses.
  • Each individual house sign-up is equivalent to 15 hours of service.
  • If you are completing this as a part of court-ordered community service and will need to provide documentation to your probation officer, please let us know when expressing interest. You will be responsible for confirming with your PO that these hours are acceptable for service.
  • We would be happy to issue a donation receipt for your Gift in Kind. Please let us know if you would like one.
