Earth Day Habitat Restoration
When you are volunteering, please follow these tips for healthy volunteering. HandsOn Greater Richmond emphasizes the importance of following CDC guidance.
In honor of Earth Day, join The James River Park System as we tackle removing invasive plants from our trees. Much of our mature tree canopy is currently at risk due to the abundance of invasive vines such as English Ivy, Japanese Honeysuckle, and Wintercreeper growing densely on the forest floor and climbing the trees themselves. We will be focusing on "freeing trees" from these vines so that they can continue to benefit our ecosystem for many years to come! Be a part of this initiative to promote biodiversity and help restore The James River Park's natural habitat and tree canopy!
We will be focusing our Earth Day efforts on Belle Isle with events from 2pm-6pm. You can park at the lot on the North Side of the river near Tredegar, or on the South Side of the river at 22nd St Parking Lot. Follow the signs walk the trail and cross the pedestrian bridge from either lot to get to Belle Isle. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your volunteer time to park and walk to the location at the center of Belle Isle near the mountain bike skills park.
Volunteers will be using small hand tools such as loppers and hand saws. Tools and gloves will be provided by JRPS, but please feel free to bring your favorite tool from home and a pair of gloves that you already own. Please bring water and a snack, wear closed toe shoes and dress comfortably as we will be outside for the duration of the project. Regardless of the weather, we strongly recommend wearing long sleeves and long pants to protect yourself from plants such as briars and poison ivy. We look forward to working with you!
