Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service 2024 - Powhite Park Entrance Prune & Clean
Please join the City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Facilities on January 15, 2024 for our annual MLK Remembrance Event. This will be a day of remembrance and celebration of the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and as well as a day of volunteer service.
Please bring a refillable water bottle, warm layers, and close-toed shoes.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Join us for a tree care and trash pickup at the Powhite Park entrance. We will be pruning back trees along the roadside to make the park entrance more visible, improve the over all aesthetic, and make it safer for vehicles pulling in and out onto the busy Jahnke road. Volunteers will be pruning and picking up trash along the road - high visibility safety vests will be provided. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
Tools and gloves will be provided, but feel free to bring along your own garden gloves if preferred. Be sure to wear closed toed shoes/boots and clothing that you don't mind getting dirty or snagged. No prior experience or special skills necessary, though some lifting (max. 50lbs), bending, overhead reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling and stooping may be required. All activities will be located outdoors on park grounds, near the entrace of the park. Expect some uneaven and rough terrain (ex: turf lawn, curbs, and paved road), however most areas are accessible for mobility users. Please be aware of the weather forecast, and dress accordingly (this event is rain or shine, however advance communication will be sent if we need to cancel).
Time Commitment:
Expect for this volunteer opportunity to be 2-hours long, however it may be shortened depending on completion of tasks. Sign-ups close 48hrs before the opportunity! Volunteer hours will be verified within 72hrs after the end of the event, though the HandsOn Greater Richmond website. Please bring along your paperwork, if a seperate form needs to be signed.

All volunteers will gather and meet just inside of the yellow metal park gates.

If arriving by bicycle, there are some parking signs near by so bring a cable lock.

If arriving by vehicle, please pull into the park entrance way and park on the sides of the road. Car pooling is encouraged!
