FIRST Robotics Competition Chesapeake District Qualification Event

FIRST Robotics Competition gives teams of 10 or more high school students and their adult mentors the opportunity to work and create together to solve a common problem. Challenged to design and build a robot using a standard “kit of parts” and within a common set of rules to play a sophisticated field game − with limited time − brings out the best in students and adults alike. The robot “game” changes every season and is always exciting.

FIRST Chesapeake hosts district qualification events throughout March, the first of which will be at Deep Run High School in Glen Allen, Virginia, from March 1st to 2nd. All of our events are run primarily by volunteers, who fill a variety of different roles. Please indicate which role(s) you are interested in when you express interest in this event!

Judges: This role requires volunteers to be present on both Saturday (7 AM to 7 PM) and Sunday (7 AM to 5 PM). Judges select teams to receive various awards by interviewing them, reviewing provided information, and watching their robots compete. No prior experience with FIRST, robotics, or engineering is required. Teams are always incredibly excited to share what they are working on, and talking with them about this is quite rewarding.

Field Resetters: This role requires volunteers to be present on either Saturday (7 AM to 7 PM) or Sunday (7 AM to 5 PM), or both days. Volunteers in this role reset the playing field between each match and assist with necessary repairs. No prior experience with FIRST is required. Volunteers should expect to be on their feet and moving around throughout the day.

Official Scorers: This role requires volunteers to be present on either Saturday (7 AM to 7 PM) or Sunday (7 AM to 5 PM), or both days. Volunteers in this role observe matches, count game pieces, and input scores, working under the direction of the head referee. No prior experience with FIRST is required. Volunteers should expect to be on their feet and moving around throughout the day.

All volunteers will receive a t-shirt. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. For verification of volunteer hours, please bring a form to the event to be signed.

Registration for this event is through the FIRST Inspires system. A background check is required, which FIRST provides at no cost.
