Opportunity Details
Costume Shop Reorganization
Brief Organizational Description:
SPARC is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to providing exceptional performing arts and technical theatre training to youth ages 4-18 in the Greater Richmond Community. We offer a variety of classes, camps, audition-based productions, and more throughout the school year and summer.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
As an almost 45-year-old company, we've accumulated a lot of stuff over the years! It is time to parse through our costume storage space and downsize so that we can ultimately move into a smaller space. Volunteers, led by SPARC Production Staff members, will be sorting through clothing and accessory items to determine what stays, what gets thrown away/recycled, and what can be donated. Our goal is to get shelves and racks reorganized so that when it is time to rehome the costume shop, we know exactly what we're bringing along.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Volunteers will be sorting through garments and working with staff members to reorganize or rehome each item. Our space is large and messy! Many of the items stored in the costume shop are beyond repair or have been damaged by dry rot/weather. Volunteers will need to have an eye for detail and be patient; though there will be some general guidelines for how to approach each piece, many items will require consult from a staff member.
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
No prior theatre or costume experience is necessary, though we appreciate folks who have worked with garments before!
Volunteers should be prepared to work in an environment that is not temperature controlled (we will have fans set up but the AC is out!) and wear clothes that can get messy. Some lifting may be required as damaged-garment piles get moved to the dumpster.
Volunteers must be able to use stairs, as the costume shop is on the second floor of a storage building that does not have a functioning elevator.
Time Commitment:
Saturday, April 19 from 2:30pm-6:30pm
