Day of Service & Celebration: Trailwork - rvaMORE, the JRPS trail crew, VCU OAP
Thank you so much for your interest in signing up for an Inaugural Day of Service project at Larus Park, hosted by rvaMORE, the JRPS trail crew, and the VCU Outdoor Adventure Program's Event Class.
Brief Organizational Description:
rvaMORE is a Richmond based nonprofit that works to enhance the trail experience for all users through people, tools, and advocacy. For the rain date of the 2025 Inaugural Day of Service, we are partnering with the James River Parks Systems Trail Crew and members of the VCU Outdoor Adventure Program's Event class to host a volunteer day at Larus Park while we work to reroute a section of the current trail system. As it stands, a steep grade is creating erosion of sediment into the nearby creek, and exposing tree roots that are needed to preserve the hillside. This reroute will help preserve needed vegetation for grade support and stop the continued washout of sediment in the nearby waterway.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
For this workday, volunteers will be using trail specific tools to finish a roughed in trail. Expect to be working in the dirt, using handtools to create the final trail upgrade. We will meet at 845am, then head to the trail system together at 9am. The JRPS trail crew will explain the nature of the project, going over proper tool use and demonstrating the desired result. We will work alongside volunteers to ensure a great and productive day.
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
Access to the soft surfaced trail network in Larus park can be prohibitive to those with mobility challenges, unfortunately. We encourage you to reach out in advance if you have any needs with access, but this event will include a hike on uneven surfaces that are made of loose, rocky dirt. We will work with volunteers to demonstrate good tool use, so we have a succesful day of trail building.
Time Commitment:
Our workday will run from 9am until noon.

Please check in with a VCU, rvaMORE, or JRPS trail crew member upon arrival to sign the workday waiver

A brief orientation will take place before we start work to familiarize volunteers with handtools and the work to be done

Sturdy closed toe shoes are necessary, and please bring work gloves! You will want to wear clothing that you don't mind getting dirty.

Park behind the offices at 8720 Stony Point Parkway, in the spaces nearest to the park trailhead. When possible, please carpool!

Bring a reusable water bottle like a nalgene
