Making History:Transcribe

The Library of Virginia acquires, preserves, and provides access to unique collections of Virginia’s history and culture. With more content and research moving online, we seek to make digital documents as accessible as possible by crowdsourcing this massive historical project. Crowdsourcing empowers communities to make their own history and you can be a part of it!

Volunteers will transcribe handwritten pages by reading the written text and typing it into digital form. They will also review other transcriptions for accuracy. Participate in enhancing access to collections of over 400 years of Virginia history, people, and culture. From peace to wartime, court records to letters home, and conspiracies to political statements, there will be something for everyone.  These include documents from Virginia Untold: the African American Narrative, records of the Equal Suffrage League of Virginia, and documents from WWI and WWII.  Help us tell the narrative of all Virginians - the famous, infamous and even anonymous - and join us in Making History.

Parking is available under the building, with entrances on 8th and 9th streets and will be validated at the end. Sixteen computer stations will be available. If you have your own laptop, please bring it!

Special Parking Instructions:

The Library of Virginia offers limited free parking to patrons using the building during operating hours. If the Library's garage is full, the City of Richmond offers on- and off-street parking options, and a map to other parking decks is available at BestParking.com. The parking garage entrances at the Library of Virginia are located on 8th and 9th Streets and have a height restrictions of 7 feet.  Both 8th and 9th Streets are one way streets.  Elevators will take patrons from the parking garage to the lobby of the library.  Parking validations are given in the lobby when leaving the library.

All volunteers who plan to attend must be registered. This includes youth. If the post indicates adults must be present, youth and adults must register using the team functionality. To learn more about our team functionality, please view our Volunteer with a Group page.
