Opportunity Details

Help high school students practice "adulting" skills! 💸

Brief Organizational Description:
Junior Achievement of Central Virginia (JACV) is one of over 100 JA Areas in the United States. Together, we are the nation's largest organization dedicated to bringing students critical education around job skills, money skills, and entrepreneurship.

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Volunteers at JA Finance Park will support a small group of students as they learn to build a budget (for many of them, for the very first time!). Share your career story, your day-to-day experience budgeting and spending money, and be the students' biggest cheerleader as they explore and discuss careers and money. No experience is necessary; if you are an adult who spends money, you are qualified!

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

JA Finance Park is a program facilitated by JA staff, so the volunteer ask is very simple. Volunteers will:

  • share stories and advice from their own lives
  • lead discussions and ask questions at their tables
  • ask JA staff for support with technical issues or student needs

Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
There are no qualifications or experience required to volunteer at JA Finance Park. The perspectives of ALL members of the community are valuable for our students!

Time Commitment:
This is a 4 hour volunteer experience. Specific times are listed. This time includes a brief training session.

Other Information (if applicable):

  • There will be a brief morning training session prior to student arrival.
  • Business casual attire or a volunteer shirt and jeans are appropriate.
  • JA Finance Park is located on the third floor of Libbie Mill Library.
    • Park in the back row of spaces to leave closer spots for library patrons.
  • Bring a packed lunch (there is not enough time to go offsite for lunch), your reading glasses (if needed), and a refillable water bottle.
  • Don't be nervous! Here is some advice from our over 1,500 yearly volunteers:
    • “It is easier and more rewarding than you think it would be!”
    • “Just do it. With the training you’ll receive, you will be prepared to handle the day.”
    • “Think of stories and situations from your life that can provide practical help to the students. I was surprised at how much I could interject throughout the day in terms of financial advice from an adult point of view.”
The opportunity date and time you are looking for is no longer available. Here are the next available dates and times.
