First Tee & Henrico County Title I 5th Grade Field Trips
Brief Organizational Description:
First Tee – Greater Richmond (FTGR) is a youth development organization that uses the game of golf and its inherent values to shape the lives of young people from all walks of life. We are strengthening the character of the community by providing programs that build resilience in our youth, teach critical life skills, and provide caring adult supervision in a safe environment through the game of golf.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
First Tee - Greater Richmond has a very busy fall schedule in delivering field trip experiences to 5th grade students from Henrico County Title I elementary schools. Volunteers play a vital role in supporting youth engagement through golf and life skills education. Volunteers help ensure a positive, fun, and safe experience for students during the field trip. During each field trip, 5th grade students rotate to six different golf stations that include putting, chipping, pitching, and full swing.
Our organization is committed to facilitating 5th grade field trips for all Title I elementary schools in Henrico County during the 2024-2025 school year. This will provide 22 schools the opportunity to come to our green grass facilities featuring six fun and engaging stations. These field trips feature approx. 80 students each session and requires 12 volunteers to execute to First Tee - Greater Richmond standards.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist in the set-up and breakdown of activity station materials and equipment.
- Support program staff in leading activities, games, and lessons related to golf and character development.
- Supervise and engage with students, ensuring their safety and well-being throughout the trip.
- Encourage teamwork, sportsmanships, and positive communication among students.
- Act as a positive role model, promoting the key commitments of First Tee.
- Communicate effectively with staff, students, teachers, and chaperones as needed.
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
- Basic knowledge of golf is a plus, but not required.
- Passion for working with youth and promoting positive life skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively.
- Patience, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
Time Commitment:
Availability for the duration of the field trip. Two shifts are available to best fit with your availability.
- First shift: 9:00am - 11:30am
- Second shift: 11:00am - 1:30pm
- Both shifts are preferred, but not required
Other Information (if applicable):
- Volunteer hours can be verified by a First Tee - Greater Richmond staff member.
- Instructions will be provided the day of the field trip during a brief orientation prior to students arriving.
- Golf attire is preferred. Please wear comfortable, closed toe shoes and dress for the weather (rain jacket, hat, etc.).
- Park in the lower lot of Belmont Golf Course.
- Check-in on the patio located directly behind the driving range.
