The Arc of Hanover Thrift Store

 

Brief Organizational Description: 
The Arc of Hanover works to ensure those with intellectual and developmental disabilities are respected and included by advocating for their rights, connecting families, inspiring communities, and improving systems of support and services. 

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Our Thrift Store has several positions available for volunteers.  We are open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and the shifts run from 9:45 to 2:00 PM and from 12:45 PM to 5 PM.  We welcome you for a whole shift or a portion if that is all your schedule allows.  

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

Greeter: Greet customers, sometimes hand out materials and thank them for coming in to shop with us.

Buddies: Work side by side with one of our talented volunteers with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities.  provide encouragement, assist with transitioning between tasks, and have fun.

Warehouse intake: Greet donors, help unload items and begin the initial sorting process.

Warehouse sorting: Sort donations into appropriate stations.

Clothing sorting: Sort and hang clothing and shoes.

Merchandising: Ensure all items on the showroom floor are priced and set up in a visually appealing manner.  Do you enjoy decorating?  This is the job for you. 

Register and Register Support person: Run the register or assist the cashier with wrapping items, may be needed to assist with carrying light items to cars.

Cleaning: Empty trash and ensure the showroom area is clean.  May include washing windows and doors at the front of the store.  Tidy, sweep, refill paper products and wipe down bathrooms and breakroom.

Repair person:  Some items need a little TLC before going out on the floor for sale.  Test electronics and appliances, minor furniture repairs, test and repair lamps. 

Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
The ability to stand for periods of time (accommodations can be made to be seated for some of the jobs), must be friendly, kind to customers and other volunteers.

Time Commitment:
We prefer if you can work a shift of 4 to 5 hours but can accommodate schedules to some degree.  The store manager will contact you after you have expressed interest and determine scheduling.
